Do we really recycle used beer?
Cause we do!!…Well ok, Not really!
We here at Yorke Brewing are very aware of the impact we all make on this planet. Anything we as individuals, or businesses can do to help the environment should be encouraged and publicised. After all, without Mother Nature we wouldn’t have water, malt, hops or yeast…and that means no beer!!!
Currently Yorke Brewing plans to have 100 000L worth of rainwater storage tanks to minimise the needs on the mains water supply. From here that rainwater will be used in the brewhouse for beer production and cleaning tasks. All the wastewater produced by the brewhouse will be treated in a state of the art 'phototropic' bacteria treatment plant. This water can then be used after filtration back into the brewery with the excess feeding all site toilets and sinks.
Once the waste water from our basins/ sinks and toilets has been flushed away, this stream of waste is treated again in a anaerobic biocycle treatment system which cleans and disinfects the water ready to be used for irrigation on the brewery lawns and gardens.
POWER: As a microbrewery is a large consumer of energy, Yorke Brewing is looking at the following ways to minimise its environmental footprint:
- Source all electricity from 100% green powered suppliers
- Install a solar hot water system
- Install solar panels to reduce electricity usage
- Use heat exchanging principals to capture and reuse lost heat
- Install energy efficient fluorescent lighting
- Look at installation of small wind turbines when cost effective
RECYCLE: Yorke Brewing will compost all spent grain and yeast from the brewhouse, thus adding nutrients to the brewery garden. Excess spent grain can also be sold or donated to local farmers for stock feed
A common sense approach to recycling all glass, paper and cardboard waste from Yorke Brewing, and purchasing products made from recycled materials where possible is also paramount.
